Headshot of Ellie Tsang, a nonbinary video game narrative designer, sitting in their wheelchair and smiling at the viewer.

Ellie Tsang (they/she) is a Chinese-American writer and award-winning narrative specialist with a particular weakness for RPGs and stories that care about the choices players make.

For the past six years, they've written and implemented game narratives, including three years on the Nemesis System at Monolith Productions, one of the industry's more curious experiments in emergent storytelling. Their work is grounded in honouring player agency: dialogue systems that branch intuitively, quests with multiple solution paths, narrative content that holds together even when players take things gloriously sideways.

They've led writing teams, built narrative frameworks from scratch, and shepherded content from first concept to in-engine implementation — which requires keeping narrative on good terms with design, art, production, and co-dev teams all at once. :)

Their work has been recognised by the Gamescom BIG Festival (Aether & Iron), the International Serious Play Awards (Advance U: The TALENT Machine), and the Unity EdTech Creator Challenge (Vidaly). Their writing has been published in Elegant Literature and The Game Narrative Kaleidoscope.

Ellie is a multiclasser, bringing ten additional years of industry experience across concept art and game design — within AAA, indie, tabletop, and serious games — which means they can find common ground and speak fluently between disciplines throughout production. They hold an MFA in Game Design from Academy of Art University (2024), have taught and developed university curriculum in narrative and game design, and were recognised as a Diversity in Games (DIG) scholar in 2026. They've spoken at PAX East, GDC, Geek Girl Con, and universities across North America and Europe.

Outside of the work, they are a hobbyist bookbinder, board game connoisseur, mythology buff, educational variety streamer, and former licensed mortician.

If you want someone who can wear many narrative and design hats, and talk to multiple departments easily, Ellie is the person you want. They’re a narrative powerhouse and a team all-rounder who will own any role they take on.
